This 14-day Indian toddler meal plan covers ages 1–5 years at ~1,200 kcal/day, split 300/360/180/360 across breakfast, lunch, snack, dinner [1][2]. The plan is designed around the four most important food-safety and nutrition realities for Indian toddlers:
**1. Choking risk is the leading non-illness cause of childhood injury — strict guardrails apply.** The American Academy of Pediatrics flags whole nuts, whole grapes, hard candy, raw carrot chunks, and large grape-tomato halves as the top choking hazards through age 4 [3]. This plan uses **nut butters and ground nut pastes** instead of whole almonds or walnuts; **halved grapes lengthways** instead of whole; **soft-cooked, finely chopped** raw vegetables; and avoids hard sweets and toffees entirely. Every snack and meal is size- and texture-appropriate for the age group.
**2. Iron-deficiency anaemia affects 67% of Indian children under 5 — preventing it requires deliberate meal timing.** [4] Cow milk in excess (>500 ml/day) is the single biggest contributor — it both displaces iron-rich foods AND blocks non-heme iron absorption when consumed with iron-containing meals. This plan caps milk at **2 cups (400–500 ml)/day** and times it AWAY from iron-heavy meals (rajma, palak, jaggery). Iron-fortified atta and ragi appear regularly; vitamin-C pairings (lemon, amla, tomato) lift non-heme iron absorption 2–3× [5].
**3. Salt and added sugar should stay near zero through age 2 and minimal through age 5.** WHO recommends <2 g salt/day for 1–3 year olds [6]. This plan uses **plain dahi, no namkeen, no biscuits, no fruit juice** — fruit is whole or pulped, not strained. Family meals shared with the toddler are mildly seasoned at the toddler's portion and salted at the adult's plate (a standard Indian household trick).
**4. Honey is dangerous under 12 months only — but several other restrictions extend longer.** Cow milk as primary beverage is appropriate from 12 months; egg whites and soft eggs are safe from 12 months in non-allergy households; tree nuts as paste are safe from 6–7 months; cow milk as the only fluid intake is inappropriate before 12 months. This plan assumes 1+ years and includes age-appropriate cow milk + nut paste + eggs. For 6–11 month complementary feeding, use the dedicated infant feeding guide — not this plan.
**Always consult your pediatrician before starting any structured plan for a child** — individual growth trajectory, micronutrient status, and any allergy/intolerance history must inform real-world implementation.

Most of the week’s cooking happens on Sunday. Doing the prep up-front means weekday meals come together in 10 minutes or less.
Toddler nutrition shapes growth velocity and lifetime food preferences. Offer variety, model good eating, and don't pressure-feed [3]. Monitor weight at well-child visits with your pediatrician. If your child has feeding concerns (refusal, choking, allergies), consult pediatric dietitian. Calorie targets are general — pediatrician guidance overrides this plan.
