Classic Caprese Skewers
A timeless Italian appetizer, Classic Caprese Skewers combine fresh mozzarella, ripe cherry tomatoes, and fragrant basil leaves, all drizzled with a sweet and tangy balsamic glaze for a burst of fresh flavor in every bite.
For 6 servings
Gently wash the cherry tomatoes and fresh basil leaves under cold water. Pat them thoroughly dry with a paper towel to remove any excess moisture.
If using larger basil leaves, fold them in half or tear them slightly to fit the skewer better and ensure even distribution of flavor.
Take one small wooden skewer. Thread a mozzarella pearl onto the skewer first, pushing it about a third of the way down.
Next, thread a fresh basil leaf (folded if large) onto the skewer, positioning it next to the mozzarella.
Follow with a cherry tomato, pushing it gently but firmly against the basil and mozzarella.
Repeat the pattern – mozzarella, basil, tomato – one more time on each skewer, ensuring there's enough space at the end to handle. Aim for 2 of each ingredient per skewer for a substantial bite.
Arrange the assembled Caprese skewers neatly on a serving platter.
Just before serving, lightly drizzle the skewers with extra virgin olive oil, then with the balsamic glaze.
Finish with a sprinkle of flaky sea salt and a grind of fresh black pepper over all the skewers. Serve immediately.
What to keep in mind.
4 tips from the recipe — small details that make a real difference to the final dish.
- 1Ingredient Quality is Key: Since there's no cooking, the flavor relies entirely on the freshness and quality of your tomatoes, mozzarella, and basil. Opt for ripe, vibrant tomatoes and fresh, milky mozzarella.
- 2Prep Ahead: You can assemble the skewers up to 2 hours in advance and store them in the refrigerator. However, wait to drizzle with olive oil, balsamic glaze, salt, and pepper until just before serving to prevent the basil from wilting and the tomatoes from becoming watery.
- 3Presentation Matters: Arrange the skewers attractively on a white platter for a striking visual contrast. Garnish with a few extra basil leaves or a small bowl of balsamic glaze for dipping.
- 4Temperature: Serve Caprese skewers at room temperature for the best flavor. If refrigerated, let them sit out for 15-20 minutes before serving.
