Simple Mulled Apple Cider
A comforting and aromatic non-alcoholic beverage, this Simple Mulled Apple Cider combines crisp apple cider with warming spices like cinnamon and cloves, and bright orange slices, perfect for cozy evenings or festive gatherings.
For 4 servings
Prepare the aromatics: Wash the orange thoroughly. Slice the orange into 1/4-inch thick rounds. Take half of the orange slices and stud them with the whole cloves, pushing the pointed end of each clove into the orange peel.
Combine ingredients: In a medium-sized saucepan or Dutch oven, pour in the apple cider. Add the studded orange slices, remaining plain orange slices, cinnamon sticks, star anise (if using), and sliced fresh ginger (if using).
Gentle heating: Place the saucepan over medium-low heat. Bring the mixture to a very gentle simmer. Do not allow it to come to a rolling boil, as this can cause the spices to become bitter and evaporate the delicate aromas.
Infuse flavors: Reduce the heat to low and let the cider gently simmer for at least 15-20 minutes, or up to 30 minutes, to allow the flavors to fully meld and infuse. The aroma should fill your kitchen.
Sweeten and serve: Taste the mulled cider. If desired, stir in maple syrup or honey, one tablespoon at a time, until your preferred sweetness is reached.
Strain (optional) and enjoy: Carefully strain the mulled cider through a fine-mesh sieve into a heatproof pitcher or directly into mugs, discarding the spices and fruit. Alternatively, you can leave the spices and fruit in for presentation and ladle directly into mugs. Serve warm.
What to keep in mind.
4 tips from the recipe — small details that make a real difference to the final dish.
- 1Don't boil: Boiling can make the spices bitter and diminish the fresh apple flavor. Always keep it at a gentle simmer.
- 2Make ahead: Mulled cider can be made a few hours in advance and kept warm on a very low setting on the stove or in a slow cooker.
- 3Adjust sweetness: The sweetness of apple cider varies. Taste before adding extra sweetener, and adjust to your preference.
- 4Spice bag: For easier straining, place all whole spices (cinnamon, cloves, star anise, ginger) in a small cheesecloth bag or tea infuser before adding to the pot.
