Spicy Mandarin & Avocado Salsa
This vibrant Spicy Mandarin & Avocado Salsa is a refreshing and zesty topping that perfectly balances sweet, creamy, and spicy notes. It's incredibly versatile, enhancing everything from grilled proteins to simple tortilla chips.
For 6 servings
Carefully peel the mandarin oranges. For best results, segment them by removing as much of the white pith and membrane as possible, then dice the segments into small, bite-sized pieces. Place them in a medium mixing bowl.
Halve the ripe avocados, remove the pits, and scoop out the flesh. Dice the avocado into similar-sized pieces as the mandarin oranges and add them to the bowl with the mandarins.
Finely chop the red onion and add it to the bowl. For the jalapeño, slice it lengthwise, remove the seeds and white membrane for less heat (or leave some for more), then finely mince it and add to the bowl.
Roughly chop the fresh cilantro and add it to the bowl with the other ingredients.
Pour the fresh lime juice over the ingredients in the bowl. Add the sea salt and freshly ground black pepper.
Gently fold all the ingredients together with a spoon or spatula. Be careful not to mash the avocado, aiming to keep the distinct pieces intact.
Taste the salsa and adjust seasonings as needed. You might want a little more salt, lime juice, or even another pinch of minced jalapeño for extra kick.
Serve immediately as a topping for grilled chicken, fish, tacos, or as a vibrant dip with tortilla chips. For best flavor and texture, consume within a few hours of preparation.
What to keep in mind.
4 tips from the recipe — small details that make a real difference to the final dish.
- 1Choose ripe but firm avocados to ensure they hold their shape when diced and don't become mushy in the salsa.
- 2To prevent avocado from browning, add the lime juice immediately after dicing the avocado and mix gently.
- 3If you prefer a milder salsa, remove all seeds and white membranes from the jalapeño. For more heat, leave some or all of them in.
- 4This salsa is best enjoyed fresh. If making ahead, add the avocado just before serving to maintain its vibrant green color and firm texture.
