Steamed Snake Gourd with Lime & Herbs
This simple and refreshing Steamed Snake Gourd with Lime & Herbs recipe highlights the gourd's delicate texture and mild flavor, making it a perfect light lunch or a healthy side dish.
For 3 servings
Wash the snake gourd thoroughly. Trim off both ends and discard. Cut the gourd lengthwise, then scoop out the seeds and fibrous core using a spoon. Slice the gourd into 1-inch thick half-moon or crescent pieces.
Fill a medium pot with about 2 inches of water and bring it to a rolling boil over high heat. Place a steamer basket inside the pot, ensuring the water does not touch the bottom of the basket.
Add the prepared snake gourd pieces into the steamer basket. Cover the pot tightly with a lid and steam for 6-8 minutes, or until the gourd is tender-crisp. It should be cooked through but still retain a slight bite.
While the gourd is steaming, finely chop the fresh cilantro and juice the lime. Set aside.
Carefully remove the steamer basket from the pot. Transfer the hot, steamed snake gourd to a serving bowl. Immediately add the fresh lime juice, chopped cilantro, and salt.
Gently toss all the ingredients together until the gourd is evenly coated. Taste and adjust the salt or lime juice as needed.
If using, sprinkle the chopped toasted peanuts over the top just before serving. Serve warm or at room temperature as a light side dish or a healthy snack.
What to keep in mind.
4 tips from the recipe — small details that make a real difference to the final dish.
- 1Choose a firm, bright green snake gourd without any soft spots or blemishes for the best texture and flavor.
- 2Avoid overcooking the snake gourd; it should be tender but not mushy. Overcooking can lead to a loss of its delicate texture and nutrients.
- 3Always use freshly squeezed lime juice for the best vibrant, tangy flavor. Bottled lime juice won't yield the same bright result.
- 4For even cooking, ensure all snake gourd pieces are cut to a similar size.
