For 4 servings
Prepare the dal.
Rinse the toor dal under running water until the water runs clear. Soak the dal in fresh water for 30 minutes. This helps it cook faster and makes it easier to digest.
TIPSoaking is optional if you're short on time, but it results in a creamier dal.Pressure cook the dal.
- Drain the soaked dal and add it to a pressure cooker.
- Add the chopped tomato, grated ginger, turmeric powder, and salt (if using).
- Pour in 2.5 cups of water and stir well.
- Secure the lid and pressure cook on medium heat for 4-5 whistles, or until the dal is very soft and mushy.
TIPLet the pressure release naturally to ensure the dal is cooked through completely.Mash the dal to a smooth consistency.
Once the pressure has released, open the cooker. Whisk the dal vigorously with a wire whisk or mash it with the back of a ladle until it's smooth and creamy. If it seems too thick, add a little warm water to reach the desired consistency.
Prepare the tempering.
- Heat the ghee in a small pan (tadka pan) over low heat.
- Once the ghee is warm, add the cumin seeds and asafoetida.
- Let the cumin seeds sizzle gently for about 30 seconds. Be careful not to burn them.
TIPKeep the heat low for the tempering to prevent the delicate spices from burning.Combine and serve.
Immediately pour the hot tempering over the cooked dal. Stir everything together. Garnish with finely chopped coriander leaves if you like. Let it cool to a safe temperature before serving to your toddler.
