Perfect Morning Latte (Your Choice of Milk)
Elevate your morning with a perfectly crafted latte, featuring your choice of creamy soy or rich cow's milk, strong brewed coffee, and a delightful froth, all made in minutes at home.
For 1 serving
Brew your coffee: Prepare a single shot of espresso using an espresso machine, or brew ¼ cup of very strong coffee using a Moka pot, AeroPress, or by using extra grounds in a drip coffee maker. Set aside.
Heat the milk: Pour ¾ cup of your chosen milk into a small saucepan and heat gently over medium-low heat until it reaches about 150-160°F (65-70°C). Do not boil. Alternatively, use a microwave-safe jar: fill it halfway with milk, seal tightly, shake vigorously for 30-60 seconds, then microwave for 30-45 seconds until hot and foamy.
Froth the milk: If using a saucepan, use an immersion blender, a handheld milk frother, or a whisk to froth the milk until it doubles in volume and becomes creamy. If using the jar method, the milk should already be frothed.
Prepare your mug: If desired, add your sweetener (sugar, syrup) and/or vanilla extract to your serving mug.
Combine coffee and flavorings: Pour the hot espresso or strong coffee into the mug, stirring gently to dissolve any sweetener.
Pour the frothed milk: Hold back the foam with a spoon and slowly pour the hot, liquid milk into the coffee. Pour steadily from a slight height to help incorporate the milk.
Top with foam: Once the mug is nearly full, spoon the remaining thick foam on top of the latte.
Garnish and serve: If desired, sprinkle a pinch of ground cinnamon, nutmeg, or cocoa powder over the foam. Serve immediately and enjoy your perfect morning latte!
What to keep in mind.
4 tips from the recipe — small details that make a real difference to the final dish.
- 1Optimal Milk Temperature: Aim for milk heated to 150-160°F (65-70°C). Overheating can scald the milk, altering its taste and making it harder to froth properly.
- 2Frothing Technique: For best results with a frother, hold the wand just below the surface of the milk to incorporate air, then lower it slightly to create a swirling vortex that heats and smooths the foam.
- 3Coffee Quality Matters: The foundation of a great latte is strong, good-quality coffee. Use freshly ground beans for the best flavor profile.
- 4Latte Art Practice: For aspiring baristas, practice pouring the frothed milk steadily and consistently. A slight tilt of the mug and a controlled pour can help create simple designs.
Adapt it for your goals.
Iced Latte
For a refreshing cold drink, brew your coffee and let it cool. Fill a glass with ice, pour in the cooled coffee, then add cold milk and stir. No frothing needed, or use a cold frother for a foamy top.
Flavored LatteFlavored Latte
Customize your latte with flavored syrups like vanilla, caramel, hazelnut, or peppermint. Add 1-2 tablespoons of your preferred syrup to the mug before adding coffee and milk.
Spiced LatteSpiced Latte
Infuse warmth by adding a pinch of pumpkin spice, chai spice blend, or ground cardamom to your coffee or milk while heating. Garnish with an extra sprinkle of the spice.
Why this is on our healthy list.
Energy Boost
The caffeine in coffee provides a stimulating effect, helping to increase alertness and improve focus, making it a popular morning pick-me-up.
Nutrient Intake
Depending on the milk choice, a latte can contribute to your daily intake of essential nutrients like calcium (from dairy milk) or vitamin D and B12 (often fortified in plant-based milks).
Antioxidant Rich
Coffee is a significant source of antioxidants in many diets, which can help combat oxidative stress and may contribute to overall health.
Frequently asked questions
Whole cow's milk generally froths the best due to its fat content. Among plant-based options, oat milk and barista-blend soy milk are excellent choices for creating rich, stable foam.
