Simple Cardamom Tea
A comforting and aromatic caffeine-free tea, perfect for digestion and relaxation, featuring the warm notes of cardamom and fresh ginger.
For 1 serving
Prepare Aromatics: Gently crush the green cardamom pods using the flat side of a knife or a mortar and pestle to release their aromatic seeds. Peel and thinly slice or grate the 1-inch piece of fresh ginger.
Combine in Mug: Place the crushed cardamom pods and sliced/grated ginger into a heat-proof mug or teapot.
Add Hot Water: Carefully pour 1 cup (240 ml) of freshly boiled water over the cardamom and ginger. Ensure the water is hot enough to extract the flavors effectively.
Steep: Allow the tea to steep for 5 to 7 minutes. For a stronger flavor, you can steep it for a minute or two longer, but avoid over-steeping which can lead to bitterness.
Strain (Optional): If you prefer a clear tea, strain the infusion through a fine-mesh sieve into another mug, discarding the solids. Otherwise, you can leave them in for continuous flavor release.
Sweeten and Serve: Taste the tea. If desired, stir in 1 teaspoon of honey for sweetness or 1 teaspoon of fresh lemon juice for a tangy note. Serve immediately while warm.
What to keep in mind.
4 tips from the recipe — small details that make a real difference to the final dish.
- 1Freshness Matters: Always use fresh ginger and whole green cardamom pods for the best flavor. Pre-ground spices lose their potency quickly.
- 2Crushing Cardamom: Don't skip gently crushing the pods; this breaks them open and allows the seeds' essential oils to infuse into the water.
- 3Adjust Steeping Time: For a milder tea, steep for 3-4 minutes. For a more intense flavor, go up to 7-8 minutes. Experiment to find your preference.
- 4Temperature: Ensure the water is at a rolling boil (around 212°F / 100°C) when you pour it over the ingredients for optimal extraction.
Adapt it for your goals.

While whole pods are recommended for superior flavor and aroma, you can use 1/4 teaspoon of ground cardamom as a substitute. Be aware that ground spices can make the tea cloudy and may have a less vibrant taste.
