Simple Broiled Grapefruit
A quick and easy breakfast or light dessert, this broiled grapefruit recipe transforms a simple fruit into a warm, caramelized treat with minimal effort.
For 2 servings
Preheat your broiler to high. Line a small baking sheet with parchment paper or aluminum foil for easy cleanup.
Carefully cut the grapefruit in half crosswise. Using a small, sharp paring knife, cut around the perimeter of each grapefruit half, separating the flesh from the peel. Then, make cuts between each segment to loosen them, being careful not to cut through the bottom rind.
Place the grapefruit halves cut-side up on the prepared baking sheet.
Evenly sprinkle 1/2 tablespoon of granulated sugar (if using) over the cut surface of each grapefruit half, followed by a generous sprinkle of ground cinnamon and a tiny pinch of salt.
Place the baking sheet under the preheated broiler, about 4-6 inches from the heat source. Broil for 5-7 minutes, watching *very closely* to prevent burning. The sugar should bubble and caramelize, and the grapefruit edges should turn golden brown.
Once caramelized and warmed through, carefully remove the baking sheet from the oven.
Let the broiled grapefruit cool for 1-2 minutes before serving. Serve immediately with a spoon, optionally garnished with a mint sprig or a drizzle of honey.
What to keep in mind.
4 tips from the recipe — small details that make a real difference to the final dish.
- 1Watch Closely: Broilers can go from perfect to burnt in seconds. Never walk away while broiling grapefruit, as cooking times can vary significantly between ovens.
- 2Segment First: Pre-cutting the segments before broiling makes it much easier to eat with a spoon once cooked, allowing you to scoop out the warmed flesh effortlessly.
- 3Adjust Sweetness: The amount of sugar can be adjusted based on the grapefruit's natural sweetness and your personal preference. Brown sugar or a drizzle of maple syrup can also be used for a different flavor profile.
- 4Broiler Distance: For a slower, more even caramelization, place the grapefruit a bit further from the broiler element (6-8 inches). For a quicker, more intense char, move it closer (3-4 inches), but watch even more carefully.
Adapt it for your goals.
