Simple Elderberry & Apple Compote
A naturally sweet and tangy compote made from immune-boosting elderberries and crisp apples, simmered to perfection with minimal added sugar.
For 4 servings
Thoroughly wash the elderberries and ensure they are completely de-stemmed. Peel, core, and dice the apples into 1/2-inch pieces.
In a medium saucepan, combine the de-stemmed elderberries, diced apples, water, ground cinnamon, and fresh lemon juice.
Bring the mixture to a gentle boil over medium heat, then reduce the heat to low.
Cover the saucepan and simmer for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the apples are very tender and the elderberries have burst and softened.
Remove from heat. If using, stir in the maple syrup. Use a potato masher or the back of a spoon to gently mash the compote to your desired consistency, leaving some chunks for texture if preferred.
Allow the compote to cool slightly before serving warm, or transfer to an airtight container and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to chill completely.
Store the cooled compote in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5-7 days.
What to keep in mind.
4 tips from the recipe — small details that make a real difference to the final dish.
- 1Apple Choice: Sweeter apples like Fuji, Gala, or Honeycrisp work best to naturally sweeten the compote and reduce the need for added sugar.
- 2Consistency Control: For a smoother compote, use an immersion blender directly in the pot for a few pulses. For a chunkier texture, mash less.
- 3Freezing: This compote freezes beautifully. Portion into freezer-safe containers or ice cube trays for individual servings, and store for up to 3 months. Thaw in the refrigerator overnight.
- 4Serving Suggestions: Enjoy warm or cold over oatmeal, yogurt, pancakes, waffles, ice cream, or as a topping for toast or cottage cheese.
Adapt it for your goals.

Incorporate other berries like blueberries or raspberries along with the elderberries for a more complex berry flavor profile.
Different SweetenerDifferent Sweetener
Replace maple syrup with a tablespoon of honey, agave nectar, or a small amount of date paste for alternative sweetness, adjusting to your preference.
